Role Reasoning: Shino is already familiar with being bonded to a demon, which enables him to have powers and mysterious abilities. In that sense, he's used to being the one in control. He also treats other spirits well, with kindness and understanding. He tends to side more with the "demons" of the world rather than the ones who try to banish them. An affiliation with anything that would mean "Heaven" would probably feel wrong to him. He already doesn't like living in a church, nor following a God he doesn't believe in back home. He'd be much more comfortable developing horns instead of a halo. While he is innately good, caring for the sakes of others, he doesn't mind stepping where he isn't welcome to help those who have fallen. Not to save them, but to give them the peace they need. He's understanding to others flaws and faults, while finding those who claim to be doing the work of God rather repulsive. As such, he'd rather be a demon than an angel.

When Shino was thirteen years old, his entire village was burnt to the ground. This was because a plague had been spreading, and since the source seemed to be the village, other locations thought it was best to just be rid of the whole village.
As Shino lay dying, Rio approached him and offered for him to live by housing the demon Murasame into his body. He accepted, and forced Sousuke to continue living on with him, so that he, Sousuke, and Hamaji could live together as a family.
At his sacrifice, he gained immortality, but it also paralysed his body to stay permanently thirteen. He admits that he was so very selfish in wanting the others to continue living with him. But, as well that he would have died anyway due to his illness, he accepts being able to live on with those he loves. The change brought him to admit these things to himself, as well as dread a future in which he will have to live alone.
Sousuke and Hamaji are his siblings. Though they weren't born into his family, they are certainly the best of friends, and Shino is so happy to call them his family. They visited him frequently, despite his illness and the nobility he was growing up in. And it is that bond that made him Sousuke's life so that they could continue their lives together. When Shino becomes aware of the other Sousuke that has all of Sousuke's memories from before the fire, he becomes rattled and unsure. But he still sees it as part of Sousuke, even if he can't sort it out in his head yet.
Riou is his saviour, and the one who made sure Shino and Sousuke could continue to live. He's the one that pulls strings to keep Shino out of harm's way, as Shino possessing Murasame makes him a target. He makes sure that Shino and his family have comfortable places to stay and food in their bellies. Riou also is there to support Shino when he goes through the worst of times. While Shino doesn't exactly get along with Riou, they still have a supportive bond with each other.
Shino isn't one to hold grudges. People could do the worst things to him and he wouldn't necessarily hold it against them. He's used to being hunted down, for surviving the fires, to being abnormal, and for carrying Murasame. Even when he has been killed, twice now, he doesn't hate the people doing so. He just finds it disgusting.
Even if someone were to wrong someone close to him, he'd be angry, but he wouldn't hold a grudge or seek revenge. He does feel disappointment in people, and will state rather plainly exactly why they're corrupt and hypocritical. He does know certain actions are wrong. But he would rather empower and defend the people who are right than hold onto negative emotions to anyone. There's more that can be achieved by doing the positive work than sinking to the levels of those doing wrong.
So Shino is exceptionally capable of forgiveness, and even seeks a better way. And it would practically take world-ending circumstances to even make this stance waver.
Shino has already sacrificed his mortality and ability to age, and as well has given himself over to the assignments Riou decides to give him. He knows the ability to live a normal life is gone. He has also sacrificed Sousuke's choice when it came to still living after the fires, due to his own greed. In these senses, he's sacrificed everything to see tomorrow with the ones he loves.
Shino is willing to sacrifice much. If potential means he can return to those he loves and protect them more than before, give them the peaceful life they deserve, he is willing to jump through many more hoops to do so. Though he certainly relies on the supports of Sousuke and Murasame, so working through his own fears might take more work to deal with these things. But he can find ways to persevere, and use whatever strengths he has left, to fight for a better tomorrow. He will rely on new people, learn what sacrifices to make, and which ones to hold off on, if only to return home with something that will light the way.
CW: Sex work, stalking, murder, death
A time when Shino absolutely failed was to help Kohaku. Kohaku worked as a prostitute and had come to the church for a blessing. However, she felt unworthy of one. Shino noticed her and gave her some kind words, as well as his own cross pendant to help protect her. He had no way to determine just how quickly this would spiral out of control. Kohaku was forever grateful for Shino, and sold both of her eyes to the other Sousuke to buy more time to live. She also had a gift delivered to him by one of her customers. The customer insisted That Shino come see her, and then be taken hostage. The customer said it was Riou's fault that Kohaku's family had died, and wanted to take something precious away from Riou to show him his sins. Kohaku tried to protect him.
But when Shino tried to reason with him, the customer shot Shino in the neck, and Shino instantly died. Murasame devoured the customer, and through Murasame's power alone, Shino healed and eventually came to breathe again. Murasame's over-compensation for power caused Shino's body to temporarily return to that of an adult, and Shino returned to the church, where he found Kohaku, and she had transformed into a gruesome monster. While Kohaku declared how ugly she was, Shino insisted she looked like an angel to him, and killed her before her grief could spread even further. He apologised that he couldn't save her properly.
He chose to maintain his kindness, yet holds onto his guilt for the entire situation, especially being a source of her grief.
